CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant's Meeting
January 10 BSB 120

  • Jack Buchanan and the Physical plant have restored the gas distribution system to the East (dental) end of the Building. They are hopeful that they will be successful in restoring the West end in the very near future, although many leaks and many feet of piping remain to be tested and repaired. In a meeting earlier today, Dr. Hook expressed his appreciation to both Jack and the Physical Plant for their diligence in pursuing the malfunction and repair of the gas system and for their excellent communication throughout the ordeal.
  • Hal Currey noted that MUSC Risk Management deserved recognition for their responsiveness and professionalism during this gas system crisis, as well.

CRI Update

  • Mac McClinton reported that:
    • the Piling Load Test results indicate that the structural pilings may be reduced in length by as much as 10 feet per pile.
    • although weather delayed some of their work last week, they were able to complete a section of the duct bank for the underground electrical distribution system.
    • work on the temporary loading dock will begin shortly.
    • they switched from the "B" to the "A" electrical power feed and that the building is running well on the A feed. The B feed will remain in place for a few days to be certain that the A feed can carry the load adequately.
    • Pharmacology's Mass Spectrometer was delivered last week. John Brubaker expressed his appreciation to Hank and Mac for their help in getting the equipment off loaded and delivered safely.

Infrastructure Update

  • the change order for sound attenuation on the exhaust fan on the west end of the building has been approved and work will begin soon.
  • bond money has been approved for phase II, which includes the mechanical room expansion.

Dr. Swindle (DLAR) asked about the status of his autoclave and food locker since they are located adjacent to the existing loading dock that will soon be inaccessible. Mac McClinton assured Dr. Swindle that the autoclave and the food locker will remain accessible throughout the duration of the project. Dr. Swindle reminded the group that AAALAC inspection is very soon-Feb 8, 2002.

Dr. Schwartz asked if the filters had been installed on the auxiliary air intakes that feed the inner labs of the second floor. Mac responded that these filters had been requested through the project some weeks ago and he thought they had been installed. Dr. Schwartz said he could smell diesel fumes during the excavation the previous day and asked if something more could be done. Note: It was determined that, in fact, the filters had never been ordered so Mac ordered the filters through MB Kahn and asks that they be installed as soon as they arrive.

Next week's activities: (Jan 14-18)

  • move the telephone cable that is running through the construction site.
  • accept delivery of the temporary fuel tank and remove the existing unit.
  • install additional duct bank footage.
  • begin the temporary loading dock.
