CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant’s Meeting
January 24    BSB 120
Next meeting: January 31, 1:30 p.m., BSB120

  • Mac McClinton reviewed the progress of the removal of the fuel tank. There was a huge slab of concrete under the tank, probably the original foundation, which will be removed; a new pile foundation is going in this area. There were no leaks in the existing. The temporary tank arrangement is working well.
  • The Infectious waste trailer and house will be relocated for the duration of the project. Hank put a ramp in for access to the radioactive waste trailer to keep people from having to cross the work site.
  • The new, temporary loading dock is now open. Delivery trucks must access the dock from Bee Street; the Ashley Avenue entrance to BSB is now closed to all traffic other than construction workers and equipment. Hank has placed signs in the area. Access to the new dock for very large trucks is difficult. It may even require the help of Public Safety to stop visitor traffic while the truck turns around and backs to the dock. You can help by letting your vendors know that we cannot accommodate deliveries in very large trucks (40 feet). Please note that Parking Management has blocked off the Bee Street entrance to G lot. This is to avoid mixing the patient/staff traffic with the delivery trucks. But we are going to assess the traffic after this week and may alter our setup if possible.
  • The B-feeder is still in place, should the need arise for an alternate utility feed. Pricing is being reviewed for new lines back to sub station. The wiring is quite old and will therefore be replaced entirely from the Bee Street Substation to the electrical tunnel. They will upgrade the capacity and the size of the wire and a new feeder will be relocated from the manhole to the building.
  • The East air handler outage went as planned; the louvers are now installed and further interruption of this air handler should not be necessary anytime soon.
  • The crane will be in the President’s Parking lot on January 28 and 29. On the 28th the crane will set up and do duct work that will be placed on the end of the west exhaust system for sound attenuation. On the 29th the general exhaust system will be down for 8 hours for repairs and to replace some fireproofing. The west end of BSB will be more positive than normal because of this and the double doors (where there is key access) on the 4th floor will be hard to close.
  • Environmental Products Group won the $143,000.00 contract for a new 20,000 gallon tank (which will replace the one that was just removed) at the west end of the building. This work should begin in about 2 weeks.
  • Hank notes that pile driving will start in the middle of February.
  • Starting on Monday the planters around the back of building, the stairs into the truck dock area, and the adjacent concrete will have to be removed. This will continue for the next 5 or 6 days. Concern was expressed about noise being a problem for the occupants. Leslie Kendall is to do an email informing the occupants in the BSB building.
  • Beth Gladden mentioned that Student Interviews were being held all next week. Leslie Kendall agreed to contact Dr. Halushka.
  • Leslie Kendall asked if anyone had heard any complaints about diesel fumes this week. No one had, but Hank said there wasn’t a lot going on that would have caused fumes.
  • Scott Reid asked about the replacement of Dr. Bastia’s floor. Jack Buchanan said he would write the work order and get this done as soon as possible. It will run about $700.00 and be paid for out of the renovation project.
  • Scott Reid asked about the autoclave in the Biochemistry department that needs to be reoriented in the space it now occupies. Mac submitted drawings to Engineering for their approval. Scott Reid will contact Boyd Wood for information on the progress of this project.
  • Hank removed the hooks and platform in 224A per Beth Gladden’s request last week.
  • There is asbestos abatement and duct work that must be done before the west end air balancing can begin. This is about a $150,000 job. Much of the work is in the vicinity of 102 and the student locker rooms down the hall. We are pricing the job as weekend work but this kind of work always results in tile dust and mess left in the offices. Leslie Kendall agreed to talk with Dr. Halushka when this work is scheduled.
  • Attendees: Mac McClinton, Hank Harrison,  Jack Buchanan, Scott Reid, Beth Gladden, Leslie Kendall, Dr. Bill Ledbetter
