CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant’s Meeting
January 31    BSB 120
Next meeting: February 7, 1:30 p.m., BSB120

Infrastructure progress

  • Westend exhaust system-- Mac McClinton reviewed the infrastructure progress. The sound attenuation on the westend exhaust system is complete.
  • East air handler-- In the near future, the east air handler will have to be shut down for a short period of time so that a brace can be installed. The brace is needed to support the roof, which is bowing slightly, and to keep further deterioration from occurring.
  • Air intake filters-- Dave Dement changed the air intake filters on Tuesday. He will be checking interior filters weekly and changing as often as needed. He will be replacing the media on the outside prefilters every week. Dave will be in touch with Dr. Schwartz to see if these filters have eliminated the problems. Dr. Schwartz still smells diesel fumes from time to time in his lab.
  • Replacement fuel tank-- The utilities are being marked today that go to the west end replacement fuel tank. The DHEC permit process has started. This is a 20,000-gallon tank, which replaces the one in the back, and another will be added in the future. This is a 90-day duration project, which should be completed in late April.
Sheet piling is being vibrated down; dewatering will take place so the slab under the original tank can be removed. The northeast entrance and sidewalk will be closed for about a week while dewatering takes place.
  • BSB Security-- Concern over the lock down of BSB was discussed. Leslie Kendall agreed to report the details of the proposed security measures to BSB occupants as soon as they were available. She reminded the group that no measures would be implemented without the occupants' input.
  • Radioactive waste-- Concern over radioactive waste disposal was expressed. Hank Harrison will be contacting Radiation Safety this week. A ramp may have to be build this week to accommodate this disposal. Leslie Kendall will talk with Jim Rutan (Radiation Safety) and get an email to the occupants before next Wednesday outlining the procedure.
  • B-feed-- We will replace the old B-feed from the substation to CRI; this is being replaced because of the age of wire. The A-feed (current active feed) was replaced in July.
  • MRE-- The design for the new Mechanical Room has started. The actual structure will be bid on first, then the engineering of the contents of the building will be bid on in the spring. The building should be up and running by the following Spring, 2003.
  • BSB Lobby-During the building of CRI, the lobby of BSB will be completely refurbished-- both the elevator lobby and the lobby currently occupied by Food Services. The elevators will be completely reworked and the monumental stairs to the second floor will be added. Greg Soyka, the architect for this project, will come to our meeting Feb 14 to show us the drawings and finishes for this renovation. The work is not likely to begin before Summer 2002 and will be done in stages to minimize the inconvenience to the BSB occupants.
  • The autoclave--The autoclave on the loading dock will have to be removed to make room for the stairs. Before this work can begin asbestos abatement will have to be done. A tunnel may have to be built to allow for the abatement in the area. Although this renovation will come at great inconvenience to the occupants it is part of the overall improvement of the building and should be completed before Dr. Ondo retires… maybe.
