CRI Project Update/BSB Occupants Meeting
December 5, 2002 BSB 120

Next meeting: December 19, 2002, 1:30 p.m., BSB120

MRE - The work to install the storm drainage system was delayed due to interference with other utilities. The system has been revised twice and the materials are on order. The tank permit is being processed by MUSC. The boiler permit modeling is complete and the permit is in Columbia. The test pilings have been driven and are under test load now.

CRI - Asbestos abatement is completed on the 2nd floor. Rough-ins and demolition have begun on the 2nd floor. Asbestos abatement has begun on the first floor main elevator lobby (not the entry lobby). After final exams, asbestos abatement is to proceed into the first floor entryway.

Elevators - The west bank elevators have received final approval from the state. Unfortunately, the elevator upgrade is 5 weeks behind schedule, so work on the east bank of elevators has begun but will not be completed on schedule. However the two newly renovated elevators are a tremendous improvement and function more efficiently than the 4 old elevators have in many years. According to Dwayne McMillan, the
elevators travel from the first floor to the seventh floor in 11 seconds!

Overall - The CRI project is about 34 days ahead of the contractual completion date of May 04, 2004. The steel frame and decking are proceeding on levels 2 and 3. We hope to perform some of the more disruptive activities (pile driving, tunnel construction, demolition and asbestos abatement) during the holiday break. Many thanks to all of you who have endured the construction process thus far. We are aware that many of the activities performed both inside and outside of the building are disruptive to your research and your daily lives. Please continue to report unbearable conditions to Hank (670-2778), Mac (792-4589), Larry (792-3627, pager 12879), the Help Desk (792-4119) and/or me (876-5021, pager 11824).

Final note: The back door (west end) is being left open by delivery people and building occupants. Please understand that this exit is not for pedestrian use. It empties into the fenced-in construction site and should not be used as an access to the parking lot. We are battling cold air and diesel fumes and must keep this door closed. Thanks!

Attendees -Leslie Kendall, Mac McClinton, Hank Harrison, Dwayne McMillan, Larry Wells, Cliff Harvey, Karla Locklear, Beth Gladden, Thomas Trusk
