CRI Project
Update/BSB Occupants' Meeting Infrastructure-- Adam Gross, one of the authors of our master plan will review the location of the mechanical room expansion because there is concern over the size of the structure 60'x60'x75' high. The MRE is critical to getting the new CRI building operational on schedule. Air Balancing-- some dampers and valves in the BSB existing main ducts are in a state of disrepair. The cost of replacement valves and the removal of asbestos will exceed $200,000. Manual dampers will be installed on the west side. This will enable the air flow rate to be reduced and permit reheat. Once manual dampers are installed on the sixth floor, a test and balance will be run. The question was asked, how will the closing of the doors designated for security lock down affect the air balance? If it is balanced one way and then at 6:00 p.m. the doors are released and locked how will the air balance change? Mac explained that the test and balance will be an iterative process and the first round will be baseline data. Security Update-- Bob Waite and Leslie Kendall have begun to meet with BSB occupants to discuss their individual department's concerns about security. The occupants seem to want an 8am-5pm or 7am-6pm opening with lockdowns at nights and on weekends. Dr. Raymond will relay this information to Dr. Crouch. Radioactive Waste Disposal-- Occupational Safety and Health will continue to accept radioactive waste every Wednesday at the room on the old loading dock by the service elevators. Children's Hospital Outage-- The recent outage was successful. The high voltage tie was installed and now the high voltage HV2 feeder has been racked out at the substation. The Children's Hospital is presently being fed from the other direction and we are ready to switch over on our site so we can move the duct bank. There are two other runs that have been identified which are involved in this duct bank. One is the Hollings feed with has been cut off and racked out. The other feed is to one of the Main Hospital chillers, which is still hot. When the weather permits (temperature not over 70 degrees for 4-5 days), the outage will be set. When the BSB outage can proceed the wire will be spliced and put back in service. At this point the duct bank will be out of harms way and out of the CRI foundation footprint. Pile Driving-- The pile driving has been stopped by some equipment failures but will continue on Saturday and for the next 6-7 weeks. The pile driving has been moved to the tunnel area back behind the west end air handler. The new carbon filters should be here by Friday and will be installed as soon as they arrive. Occupants report that they can feel vibrations from the pile driving but this has not been a problem. Hank Harrison reports that in about 10 days the pile driving will be very close to the building and will probably be more noticeable. B-feed-- The BSB has 2 feeds that run to the building. One is from the A-Sub Station behind Parking Garage One. The other is from the B-Sub Station behind Allied Health. For many years the B-feed has been the primary feed; the B-feed conductors are about 30 years old. Last year the main breaker on the B-feed had some problems and had to be changed out. Last July, the A feed was discovered to be inoperable so new wire was pulled and also the main breaker in the A-sub station was reworked. We are currently using the A-feed. For now, the B-feed was been turned off and made unavailable because of two factors. One is that the cable is old and has not been energized for several weeks and if turned back on would probably not have continuity. The other factor is that the B-feed is in the footprint of the mechanical room expansion. The opinion of our engineers is that we are better off with the A-feed because the conductors are newer and the breakers are reconditioned. At this point we want the occupants of BSB to know that the building has a better system than it has had in years. But we have no redundant electrical power, emergency power, yes, but no redundant power. The B-feeder is going to take several months to be reinstalled. Women's Restroom 2nd Floor-- in anticipation of losing some existing women's rooms to the break through area some renovations will soon begin. On the second floor, a men's room will be converted into a women's room. On the 6th and 7th floors, existing office space will be converted into women's rooms. This work will be completed before any existing women's rooms are taken out of service.
