CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant’s Meeting
February 7, 2002    BSB 120
Next meeting: February 14, 1:30 p.m., BSB120

Infrastructure progress

  • The west end air handler test and balance can begin as soon as the following work is done: control valve work, asbestos abatement and ductwork.
  • The plastic pipes that were initially installed for the Cooling Tower will be replaced with black steel pipes because we have suffered about 12 blowouts at the fittings of the plastic pipes in the past 2 years.
  • The proposed Mechanical Room will house 2 stacks for boilers, all switch gear, chillers and cooling towers. The building will have to be 2 stories and approximately 80 feet high by 50 feet wide. The plan now is to put this building on the west end. Mac is concerned with the planned location because of the size and the noise emanating from this building. Mac asked Boyd Wood to go back to the Master Plan of the MUSC campus and to review this location and how this building is going to affect the MUSC campus. Considering the new research facilities planned along Bee Street and the new Dental Building in the adjacent area it may be that a Central Energy Facility is a more viable option. The design of the structure should be finished in 30 days. This building needs to be on line in about a year.

    CRI Update

  • The critical path is still thru the relocated duct bank, then piles and pile driving. The new duct bank has been installed from G lot to Waring Library.
  • Pile driving will start next week and will take about 6-8 weeks. Tunnel pile driving will begin on about March 15th. These will be the closest to the building and, perhaps, the noisiest.
  • The $2,000,000 NIH grant has been funded for animal facilities upgrades including a transgenics facility, a tunnel wash and an autoclave.
  • Pouring of concrete for the foundation will start in late February. This is one of the significant milestones of any construction project. According to the old timers, once concrete is poured the building seems to go up very quickly.
  • Hank Harrison reported that another sidewalk would be poured by the Waring Library and the back and east end of the building will get cleaned up. The water will be pumped out over the weekend and hopefully that area will dry.
  • Leslie Kendall reported progress with the radioactive waste disposal. Occupational Safety and Health agreed that if she could find some space by or near the old loading dock where the waste could be collected they would take the waste from there to the trailer.
  • John Brubaker reported that the waste trailer also serves as a decay facility, so access is still important. A new ramp is being built to the trailer to facilitate those needing access.
  • Leslie Kendall reported that little new information was available on security at BSB, but that a meeting was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. today for an update. It is important for occupants of BSB to know that no decisions will be made regarding heightened security measures in their building without their input.
  • At the next meeting of the CRI/BSB Occupants' group, Greg Soyka will be here to show the plans and finishes for the lobby renovation.
  • Attendees: Cliff Harvey Mac McClinton Leslie Kendall Hank Harrison Laura Walters Boyd Wood John Brubaker Scott Reid Beth Gladden
