CRI Project Update/BSB Occupants' Meeting
March 7, 2002 BSB 120
Next meeting: March 14, 1:30 p.m., BSB 120

Infrastructure-- Adam Gross will review the site selections and the design of the mechanical room expansion. The design of the 6th floor VAV cooling system for the confocal microscope is nearly completed and will go out for bid soon. The fuel tank contract is on hold because Dr. Greenberg would like to consider the area for a possible MRE site.

Children's Hospital Outage--The electrical switch over is schedule for March 18, 2002. The outage will not affect BSB but will affect the chillers in the Main Hospital.

Pile Driving-- Our pile driving efforts were a disaster last week. The diesel fumes from the cranes were enough to halt work. We have identified a number of steps to help alleviate this problem:
-- increase the air changes in the building from about 10 changes per hour to 12 changes per hour.
-- change the filters on the west air intake and add new carbon pleated filters on the east air intake.
-- install flexible exhaust pipe on the pile driver to divert the diesel fumes.
-- exchange our current diesel hammer for an air hammer although an air hammer is not as effective as the diesel.
-- have the mechanical engineer comment on the efficacy of (and design) a plenum to be built on the face of the air intake.
-- work Saturdays and add work shifts (taking into account the wedding and baptism schedule for St. Luke's Chapel).
-- keep a close watch on the wind and temperature conditions that may cause the fumes to be concentrated at the air intake.
-- turn the air handler off when complaints of unbearable fumes begin. Turning the air handler off does not affect the operation of he fume hoods.
-- insure that the back doors to the building are not propped open nor the roll up doors left up.

It is important to note that once the second half of a pile is driven part way into the ground, it is critical to complete the job because the soil will remold around the pile and make it difficult, if not, impossible to finish the drive. If you are bothered by diesel fumes, you should immediately call 792-4119 and they will call Hank Harrison, the construction project manager. He will shut down pile driving and OSH will be dispatched to the area. Please remember that we have a construction project to complete and pile driving is what we have to accomplish now and that shutting down this construction crew costs the institution about $5000/day, so bear with us as long as you can.

Other issues-- Beth Gladden asked if we had a start date for the renovation of the restroom on 2. Mac McClinton will get this date for Beth. BSB Security-there has been no further progress on implementing the new security measures. Restroom on 6th floor-Ed Krug asked if, instead of disrupting the 4 faculty members in the designated area to be converted into a restroom, we could renovate one of the existing men's rooms into a women's room. The result would be two women's rooms and one men's room on the 6th floor. Mac will take this suggestion back to Greg Soyka for input but believes it could be done.

758 days and counting!!!
