CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant's Meeting
April 3, 2003 BSB 120

Next meeting: April 17, 2002, 1:00 p.m., BSB120
(NOTE TIME CHANGE FOR ALL FUTURE MEETINGS)

Meeting time change: Leslie Kendall asked the occupants if they would mind starting the meeting at 1:00 rather than 1:30 so that she can attend a Research Meeting in Dr. Raymond's office each week at 2:00. Of those present, no one indicated a preference, so the meetings will be held at 1:00 every other Thursday, unless otherwise notified. The next two meetings, which are April 17 and May 1, will be held in BSB 120 at 1:00. However, the May 15 and 29 meetings will not be held in BSB 120. The location will be announced soon.

Closure of 103A men's restroom and locker room: On April 15, the men's room (103A) will be closed for 3 months for renovation, beginning with asbestos abatement. The lockers have been moved to room 115, the former mailroom. New flooring, paint and lighting will be installed in 115. In the shower/restroom area (103A), a few lockers, a bench, a panic button and card key access will be installed. Poor water pressure and lack of temperature control will also be addressed.

There are also plans for the renovation of the women's shower/restroom/locker room (113) but are less well defined at this time...will keep you posted.

The CRI major structure remains on track to be completed by May 3, 2004. The upfit of floors 3, 4, 5 and 6, is NOT included in this projection. The change order to authorize upfit of the additional floors has not yet been approved by the Budget and Control Board but is expected at the April 15 meeting. Each floor is estimated to cost $2,070,000, to upfit in a manner replicating the 2nd floor plan. Total cost of upfit:
$8,280,000. It is stressed that upfit of the 4 additional floors is predicated upon the acquisition of adequate philanthropic funds.

The critical path now runs through the exterior masonry. Formerly, fireproofing was the pacing element and still has only a couple of days of float (which means if it falls behind at all it will become the task that could hold up overall progress). Installation of the Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) is in progress on floors 2 through 5. When complete,
the contractors will move to the 7th floor interior to accommodate the scheduling needs of the animal facility and the eventual renovation of the BSB 7th floor.

All the slabs are in place on floors 1-6; the seventh level will be placed by April 10. A portion of the roof will be set as soon as possible so that the air handler can be set in place when it arrives on April 15.

On the second floor of BSB, the overhead mechanical and piping rough ins are proceeding, the lab exhaust duct is nearly complete (and visible from the street) and installation of the corridor walls has begun. Painting is to begin as soon as possible, followed by the reopening of the second floor lobby...perhaps around the first of May.

Monumental stair: Completion date is now Sept 10, 2003 for all finishes. The steel, which has significantly held up progress on the monumental stairs, is due to arrive May 6, 2003. Steel will be installed in the first floor elevator lobby area (no additional area will be closed off for this work) followed by steel installation at the second level.

The MRE: Substantial completion date is now May 12, 2004, a 22-day improvement over the previously calculated date. The storm drainage continues to be hampered by under ground obstructions. The latest obstruction, a concrete slab foundation over brick, had to be removed before work could continue. Installation of the underground fuel storage tank (20,000 gallons for diesel fuel) must begin by April 23, in order to stay on schedule. Because the tank is not yet in the ground and the tank and the excavation take up a tremendous amount of space, and all mechanical equipment for the MRE will be delivered in the next 45 days and cannot be set immediately, we will have to ask for additional lay down space in G-lot. We are most appreciative of the sacrifice being
made by Parking Management, as they are perhaps the most negatively impacted by this construction project.

In an attempt to reduce fumes entering the building we have established a "no diesel or gas engine work zone" in front of the air intake. At this time there is an electric saw being used in the vicinity but no diesel equipment. Most importantly we have enjoyed several days of good weather...dry and windy.

Editor note: the appropriate response to BSB building issues, including construction site related problems, is to call the Facilities and Engineering Trouble Desk at 792-4119. They have all of the appropriate numbers to reach Hank, Mac, Larry and OSH.

Attendees: Dwayne McMillan; Dr. Charles Darby; EP Mezkel; Cliff Harvey; Dr. Jerry Ondo; Leslie Kendal;l Laura Walters; Mac McClinton; Larry Wells.
