CRI Project Update/BSB Occupants’ Meeting
July 24, 2003, BSB 120

Next meeting: August 7, 2003, 1:00 p.m., BSB 120

MRE- The structure steel system is complete and the concrete has been poured up to the third floor. The roof has been placed. The energy efficient chiller has been set on the first floor. The equipment listed below will be delivered in August 2003 and will be set on different floors of the MRE by September 2003.
  • Pumps- first floor
  • Electrical gear- second floor
  • Boilers- third floor
  • Cooling towers- Rack on the roof above third floor

The next phase of work includes securing chilled water for the new and existing buildings. This will involve the following:

  1. Reworking one of the existing 850 chillers with new pumps, electrical system and pipes.
  2. Installation of a new chiller that was set on the first floor this week.
  3. Replacing cooling towers on the roof with new ones.
  4. Demolishing of the existing cooling towers.
  5. Removal of the wall on the west side

Next, we will tap into the existing steam loop from the hospital and run about 60’ of pipe into the tunnel. Then all pipe in the existing building and a new steam station will be put into service.

Combined, these three phases of work will complete the heating and cooling system for the BSB, CRI and MRE.

We are projecting a Summer 04 completion date for the MRE.

CRI- The current projected completion date is August 2, 2004 for the first, second, third and seventh floors. There is a pending NIH grant that will provide funding to finish floors 5&6. (The highest score in the country was given to our researchers on this NIH grant.
Congratulations to all involved!!!) We will proceed with work on the 5th and 6th floors when official notice of award is received.

Design changes have slowed construction in several areas:

The CRI administrative area to the north on the second floor was redesigned to add two offices and a provision for a future bridge from the CRI to the planned dental building. The conference room on the second floor will eventually be used for this passageway. This means with the opening of the new dental building the second floor will lose
the use of their conference room (5-10 years from now).

The second floor breakthrough was redesigned to provide fire separation between the new and existing buildings. Another revision was needed to provide access from the CRI to the freight elevators and to add a door to a faculty office from the main hallway rather than through an existing office.

The BSB lobby and stairs to the second floor lobby have been the greatest challenge to the designers, the construction team and us, the owners. It was discovered that the original design of the structural steel for the staircase ran through an existing bus duct-- both normal and emergency power for BSB run across the lobby, and to move the bus
duct would have required loss of ALL power to BSB for several days. So the stairs had to be redesigned around the bus duct. Then the terrazzo flooring had to be redesigned. We are now on the fourth redesign and the lobby is several months behind schedule. Although we had hoped to complete this work in late August it is now slated to open in October 2003. At this time, traffic to the entrance that leads to the stairs of BSB, is being rerouted to another entrance. This entrance and the associated stairwell will be closed at the first floor, except for emergency egress only. The dental entrance and the entrance to the west of the main entrance are available for use.

Construction site is off limits-- Please be reminded that the construction site is off limits to all pedestrian traffic. Please pass this along to all new students and employees. Also, as the building takes shape and curiosity and excitement mount, it is important to remember that visitors to the new building must wear hard hats and must be accompanied by the project manager. To schedule a tour please call Mac McClinton at 792-4589. Thanks!

Attendees- Mac McClinton, Leslie Kendall, Laura Walters, Dr. Charles Darby, Dr. Tom Trusk, Dr. Jim Goodrich and Dwayne McMillan
