CRI Project
Update/BSB Occupants' Meeting MRE The Budget and Control Board has been asked to consider combining the CRI and MRE projects because of the interrelated nature of the two-- the utilities tunnel, building systems, a construction schedule, warranty issues, same construction crew and design team?all factors that will have a great impact on the quality of the work to be performed on both projects. If granted, the 4.9 million dollar budget for the MRE would be combined with the CRI budget. Work should begin very soon with the extension of the tunnel and driving piling for the MRE foundation. CRI The construction schedule has suffered eleven days of delay because of weather and subsequent rework but still on schedule for the construction contract deadline. The last pour for the pile caps (a significant milestone) is scheduled for 9/06/02. A sample panel of every exterior building component is under construction near the Ashley Ave corner of the building. It will serve as an example of workmanship and color for the occupants and the architect of flashing details, brick, stone, mortar and windows. The BSB elevator upgrade has begun. Kone A Elevator Company will be onsite until the 9-11 week upgrade is completed. First the west bank of elevators will be upgraded and then the east bank. The heavy carbon filters were changed 3 weeks ago in the west air handler. But, Dave Dement reported that this lab gets air from three different intakes. There is a separate outdoor air intake that will be rerouted and tapped into the building system. Dr. Schwartz asked that he be kept informed of the progress of this work. Note: the air intake has been rerouted and tapped into the building system. Lobby
Renovations We hope to begin the lobby renovations in November
2002 because it makes more sense to the project as a whole to do the
rework of the elevators (which are a major source of frustration to
the BSB occupants and in progress now), and then to move on to the
lobby renovation in one continuous work schedule. Remobilization of
the work crews is an expensive, time consuming and disruptive process.
The magnitude of the lobby, stair and elevator renovation and the 1. Move the
autoclave into a room that will be built on the back of the former
loading dock. This necessitates filling in of the old loading dock,
doing away with the old overhead doors, providing the services that
are necessary to support the autoclave (power, steam, drainage), moving
the autoclave, connecting the autoclave to the services and building
permanent walls around it. This will provide LAM with the 2. Complete the elevator upgrade that is currently in progress before the main lobby asbestos removal begins 3. Abate asbestos on the 2nd floor; build a tunnel to elevators and abate above the ceiling to the wooden doors on south hall, the double doors on the north hall. Reconfigure tunnels for 2nd floor lobby demolition. There will be no 2nd floor main elevator access for about 3 months. Problem: handicap access to 2nd floor. Solution: build handicap ramp at east end dental entrance for use of east end elevators. 4. Demolish walls interrelated with freight elevator lobbies on 2nd floor. Problem: M&I has equipment in these areas. Problem: what if we need access to the freight elevators. Solution: there will be limited access to the freight elevators. On the 2nd floor, if a large delivery must be accommodated, the renovation access tunnels will have to be temporarily altered to provide accesss of extra width. Problem: animals will have to be transported through M&I to get to the catwalk when there is no access to the main elevator lobby. Solution: Beth Gladden and Mike Swindle will coordinate this access. 5. Begin renovation of the 2nd floor lobby; cut hole in the floor to the 1st floor lobby below; rework all 4 elevators door jambs on the 2nd floor. Problem: significant traffic from dental area to catwalk on 2nd floor. Solution: catwalk traffic should be lessened by the move of Dentistry's Oral Surgery Clinics to CSB in the very near future. 6. In January 2003, start the main elevator lobby renovation. During asbestos abatement of the main lobby the elevators will be available for use. Note: Artists renderings of the completed lobby renovation are available on the CRI website at http://cri.musc.edu Asbestos abatement on the 7th floor will begin on Monday Sept 9. Also the 6th floor breakthrough (women?s room) will be taken at that time. The other 6th floor bathroom renovations have been completed. At the next meeting we would like to present the work schedule and artist renderings of the completed renovation project. The architect will be available to answer questions. Please try to attend if possible. Attendees -Leslie Kendall, Dr. Mike Swindle, Mac McClinton, Laura Walters, Hank Harrison, Dwayne McMillan, Dr. David Schwartz, Dr. Ed Krug, Dr. Jerry Ondo, Cliff Harvey, Scott Reid, Beth Gladden and Dr. Tom Trusk. |
