On Mon, Jan 20, '03, a 100T crane will be assembled in the
area bounded by the temporary loading dock and the hazmat
building. This crane will be in place for approx 3 weeks setting
steel on the west side of the CRI. During this time, we ask
that those receiving deliveries, vendors and contractors for
the BSB, the hazardous materials hauler and the infectious
waste hauler be particularly mindful of coordination and access
arrangements through this area. This move is necessitated
by a need to expand the steel erection effort to stay on our
schedule. So every effort will be made to accommodate the
ongoing needs of the BSB, but it is imperative that we work
as efficiently as possible with this crane. This represents
a change to our earlier plan, and it is important that it
be done.
At the same time,
the 100T crane on the east side of the CRI will be dismantled
and moved. This will require a helper crane and several trucks.
Please proceed with caution near this area Monday and Tuesday.
Pile driving efforts
should be completed by Weds, Jan 22. The pile driving and
helper cranes will be moved off site Thurs and Fri, Jan 23
and 24. Work will be ongoing in the mechanical room expansion
area to install new chilled water lines, new storm drainage,
and new underground electrical duct banks for the existing
and new buildings. Excavators will be working. Materials will
be delivered by trucks, and concrete trucks will be entering
and leaving the area adjacent to the dental annex.
The following week,
Jan 27, a smaller crane will be moved on site directly behind
the Existing BSB mechanical room to drive sheet piling for
the extension of the utilities tunnel. At the completion of
that work, it is hoped that sheet piling and excavation can
begin for the 20,000 gallon storage tank just to the north
of the mechanical room expansion.
In mid -February,
the crane will move around to the east side of CRI and complete
steel erection and decking installation. Concrete placement
will begin from the west and the north, utilizing the spaces
adjacent to the hazmat building for the pump truck. Again,
concrete trucks will be entering and leaving.
Obviously, the
northwest entrance of the BSB is going to be extremely busy
and hazardous for some time. We ask all building personnel,
students and patients to avoid using this entrance. Work will
be going on overhead and on both sides of the temporary dock.
Please be mindful of caution tape, and watch for crane and
excavator warning markers and pylons if your work requires
you to access the temporary dock. Thanks for your cooperation
and patience.

The BSB second floor passenger elevator lobby will be
closed beginning January 18, 2003 thru March 15, 2003 in order
to complete elevator,
lobby and overhead renovations. Please
note that the main passenger elevators will not service the
2nd floor, but all other floors 2-7 will have normal elevator
service. The elevators at the east end of the building (dental
end) will service all floors. Stairwells will service all
floors. The service elevators will
service all floors, but we ask that you limit the use of these
to deliveries.

Asbestos abatement procedure Some concern has been expressed
over the procedure for asbestos abatement in the BSB main
lobby. Here is a brief rundown on how it's done: tunnels are
built for pedestrian traffic, while abatement is performed
in the ceiling above the tunnel. The tunnels are wrapped 5
times with plastic to ensure that no asbestos particles can
escape into the tunnels. The tunnels and plastic wrap are
inspected and baseline air quality is monitored. Negative
air machines are brought in to ensure that the air is sucked
out of the building. The air that is sucked out is passed
through HEPA filters before being released into the outside
atmosphere. Air monitoring is performed by an independent
company in compliance with DHEC regulations throughout the
asbestos abatement procedure. Once the abatement is complete,
the air is monitored for an additional 24 hours, a visual
inspection is performed and we are then granted a "complete".
Abatement should
begin Thursday, Jan 2.
By the way: The
hole (approximately 10' X 20') to accommodate the monumental
staircase was cut into the second floor during the holidays.
Also, the north side wall of the elevator lobby (and other
internal, structural walls) were demolished during this time.
Many thanks to Hank Harrison and his crew who worked everyday
except Christmas Day to accomplish (at least some) of the
loud, dirty, obnoxious work while many of us were away.

Lobby renovations in BSB are explained in great detail here!
The BSB loading dock has reopened. Thank you for your patience!

Lobby renovations in BSB are rapidly appoaching! Elevator
work continues...

The CRI/BSB Occupants' Meeting will be held every other week
from now on. Our next meeting will be June 13, at 1:30 in
BSB 120. Special issues may be brought to my attention via
email at any time.

Tomorrow, Friday, May 31st, asbestos abatement of the central
women's room on the 4th floor of BSB will cause it to be taken
out of service... forever. The asbestos will be abated from
the area and then preparation for the eventual breakthrough
to the new CRI will begin. Other women's rooms are available
on the 4th floor. Furniture that is removed from the restroom
should be claimed by its rightful owner. Otherwise, it will
be disposed of early next week. It will be in the main elevator
lobby on the 4th floor. We appreciate the inconvenience this
work and the loss of this restroom may cause you, however,
it is part of the overall plan for the CRI. Many thanks for
your continued support of this project.

The temporary loading dock of BSB will be closed this Thursday,
May 2, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for sheet pile placement.
Deliveries of smaller items will be rerouted to the mail drop-off
point near the main BSB entrance. Larger deliveries can be
coordinated with Hank Harrison at the construction site (mobile
phone number 442-0292). Please accept our apologies for this
inconvenience. Many thanks for your understanding.

- Beginning Monday, April 22, the NW back doors to BSB will
be closed to deliveries and pedestrian traffic due to the
digging of the utilities tunnel. Emergency egress will be
maintained. Delivery of smaller items will be rerouted to
the mail drop-off point near the main BSB entrance. Larger
deliveries can be coordinated with Hank Harrison at the construction
site (mobile phone number 442-0292). For instance, Holox has
been notified that they will need to call Hank when they arrive
and he will facilitate their access to the old loading dock.
The closure of the loading dock should last for two days,
possibly one. However, a fence prohibiting pedestrian access
to the NW back doors to BSB will remain in place. We regret
this inconvenience to you but the increased risk within the
construction site due to the construction of the tunnel and
the Mechanical Room Expansion necessitates this action. The
fence will remain in place until the completion of the Mechanical
Room Expansion-- which could be a year! Entrance to and exit
from BSB will be from the doors located on the south side
main entrance or the east side dental entrance. Thank you
for your patience and cooperation during this construction
process.
Here's the good
news: we think that today will be the final day of pile driving!!!
Congratulations and many thanks to Hank and the crew for a
job well done!!! And, of course, many thanks to those of you
who have endured this process.

- Less than 90 piles left to be driven! A new and much improved
camera was obtained for CRI-CAM.
3/28/2002
- Pile driving is over half finished, and should be completed
within 3 weeks.
3/18/2002
- Pile driving will be moving away from the main building
this week. A new camera has been mounted on the roof of the
BSB for a better view of the CRI building site (see the CRI-CAM
link above). Thanks Hank!

- Today our pile driving efforts were a disaster... in fact,
we didn't even drive any pilings because the diesel fumes
from the cranes were enough to halt work. The major difference
between the conditions on Monday (no complaints and pile driving)
and today were weather related. So we know that there is some
condition that is favorable for pile driving and we are going
to do everything we can to identify it and use it to our advantage.
We believe the wind direction is the variable. So, tomorrow
morning the construction crew is going to start by welding,
grinding and cutting and observing the prevailing wind. If
we see that the wind is blowing the smoke away from the air
intake, then at 0800, we are going to begin driving piles.
Occupational Safety and Health will be on site to monitor
any calls.
