4/10/2003- New images added: Dwayne McMillan's Photo Album is up!

1/17/2003- On Mon, Jan 20, '03, a 100T crane will be assembled in the area bounded by the temporary loading dock and the hazmat building. This crane will be in place for approx 3 weeks setting steel on the west side of the CRI. During this time, we ask that those receiving deliveries, vendors and contractors for the BSB, the hazardous materials hauler and the infectious waste hauler be particularly mindful of coordination and access arrangements through this area. This move is necessitated by a need to expand the steel erection effort to stay on our schedule. So every effort will be made to accommodate the ongoing needs of the BSB, but it is imperative that we work as efficiently as possible with this crane. This represents a change to our earlier plan, and it is important that it be done.

At the same time, the 100T crane on the east side of the CRI will be dismantled and moved. This will require a helper crane and several trucks. Please proceed with caution near this area Monday and Tuesday.

Pile driving efforts should be completed by Weds, Jan 22. The pile driving and helper cranes will be moved off site Thurs and Fri, Jan 23 and 24. Work will be ongoing in the mechanical room expansion area to install new chilled water lines, new storm drainage, and new underground electrical duct banks for the existing and new buildings. Excavators will be working. Materials will be delivered by trucks, and concrete trucks will be entering and leaving the area adjacent to the dental annex.

The following week, Jan 27, a smaller crane will be moved on site directly behind the Existing BSB mechanical room to drive sheet piling for the extension of the utilities tunnel. At the completion of that work, it is hoped that sheet piling and excavation can begin for the 20,000 gallon storage tank just to the north of the mechanical room expansion.

In mid -February, the crane will move around to the east side of CRI and complete steel erection and decking installation. Concrete placement will begin from the west and the north, utilizing the spaces adjacent to the hazmat building for the pump truck. Again, concrete trucks will be entering and leaving.

Obviously, the northwest entrance of the BSB is going to be extremely busy and hazardous for some time. We ask all building personnel, students and patients to avoid using this entrance. Work will be going on overhead and on both sides of the temporary dock. Please be mindful of caution tape, and watch for crane and excavator warning markers and pylons if your work requires you to access the temporary dock. Thanks for your cooperation and patience.

1/15/2003 - The BSB second floor passenger elevator lobby will be closed beginning January 18, 2003 thru March 15, 2003 in order to complete elevator,
lobby and overhead renovations.
Please note that the main passenger elevators will not service the 2nd floor, but all other floors 2-7 will have normal elevator service. The elevators at the east end of the building (dental end) will service all floors. Stairwells will service all floors. The service elevators will
service all floors, but we ask that you limit the use of these to deliveries.

12/30/2002 - Asbestos abatement procedure Some concern has been expressed over the procedure for asbestos abatement in the BSB main lobby. Here is a brief rundown on how it's done: tunnels are built for pedestrian traffic, while abatement is performed in the ceiling above the tunnel. The tunnels are wrapped 5 times with plastic to ensure that no asbestos particles can escape into the tunnels. The tunnels and plastic wrap are inspected and baseline air quality is monitored. Negative air machines are brought in to ensure that the air is sucked out of the building. The air that is sucked out is passed through HEPA filters before being released into the outside atmosphere. Air monitoring is performed by an independent company in compliance with DHEC regulations throughout the asbestos abatement procedure. Once the abatement is complete, the air is monitored for an additional 24 hours, a visual inspection is performed and we are then granted a "complete".

Abatement should begin Thursday, Jan 2.

By the way: The hole (approximately 10' X 20') to accommodate the monumental staircase was cut into the second floor during the holidays. Also, the north side wall of the elevator lobby (and other internal, structural walls) were demolished during this time. Many thanks to Hank Harrison and his crew who worked everyday except Christmas Day to accomplish (at least some) of the loud, dirty, obnoxious work while many of us were away.

10/31/2002 - Lobby renovations in BSB are explained in great detail here!
The BSB loading dock has reopened. Thank you for your patience!

9/5/2002 - Lobby renovations in BSB are rapidly appoaching! Elevator work continues...

7/23/2002 - Utility tunnel work nears completion. We have some photos here.

6/4/2002 - The CRI/BSB Occupants' Meeting will be held every other week from now on. Our next meeting will be June 13, at 1:30 in BSB 120. Special issues may be brought to my attention via email at any time.

5/30/2002 - Tomorrow, Friday, May 31st, asbestos abatement of the central women's room on the 4th floor of BSB will cause it to be taken out of service... forever. The asbestos will be abated from the area and then preparation for the eventual breakthrough to the new CRI will begin. Other women's rooms are available on the 4th floor. Furniture that is removed from the restroom should be claimed by its rightful owner. Otherwise, it will be disposed of early next week. It will be in the main elevator lobby on the 4th floor. We appreciate the inconvenience this work and the loss of this restroom may cause you, however, it is part of the overall plan for the CRI. Many thanks for your continued support of this project.

5/1/2002 - The temporary loading dock of BSB will be closed this Thursday, May 2, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for sheet pile placement. Deliveries of smaller items will be rerouted to the mail drop-off point near the main BSB entrance. Larger deliveries can be coordinated with Hank Harrison at the construction site (mobile phone number 442-0292). Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience. Many thanks for your understanding.

4/19/2002 - Beginning Monday, April 22, the NW back doors to BSB will be closed to deliveries and pedestrian traffic due to the digging of the utilities tunnel. Emergency egress will be maintained. Delivery of smaller items will be rerouted to the mail drop-off point near the main BSB entrance. Larger deliveries can be coordinated with Hank Harrison at the construction site (mobile phone number 442-0292). For instance, Holox has been notified that they will need to call Hank when they arrive and he will facilitate their access to the old loading dock. The closure of the loading dock should last for two days, possibly one. However, a fence prohibiting pedestrian access to the NW back doors to BSB will remain in place. We regret this inconvenience to you but the increased risk within the construction site due to the construction of the tunnel and the Mechanical Room Expansion necessitates this action. The fence will remain in place until the completion of the Mechanical Room Expansion-- which could be a year! Entrance to and exit from BSB will be from the doors located on the south side main entrance or the east side dental entrance. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this construction process.

Here's the good news: we think that today will be the final day of pile driving!!! Congratulations and many thanks to Hank and the crew for a job well done!!! And, of course, many thanks to those of you who have endured this process.

4/6/2002 - Less than 90 piles left to be driven! A new and much improved camera was obtained for CRI-CAM.

3/28/2002 - Pile driving is over half finished, and should be completed within 3 weeks.

3/18/2002 - Pile driving will be moving away from the main building this week. A new camera has been mounted on the roof of the BSB for a better view of the CRI building site (see the CRI-CAM link above). Thanks Hank!

3/6/2002 - Today our pile driving efforts were a disaster... in fact, we didn't even drive any pilings because the diesel fumes from the cranes were enough to halt work. The major difference between the conditions on Monday (no complaints and pile driving) and today were weather related. So we know that there is some condition that is favorable for pile driving and we are going to do everything we can to identify it and use it to our advantage. We believe the wind direction is the variable. So, tomorrow morning the construction crew is going to start by welding, grinding and cutting and observing the prevailing wind. If we see that the wind is blowing the smoke away from the air intake, then at 0800, we are going to begin driving piles. Occupational Safety and Health will be on site to monitor any calls.

In addition, we have now increased the air changes in the building from about 10 changes per hour to 12 changes per hour. We have changed the filters on the west air intake and have added new carbon pleated filters on the east air intake. If you are bothered by diesel fumes you should immediately call 792-4119 and they will call Hank Harrison, the construction project manager. He will shut down pile driving and OSH will be dispatched to the area. Please remember that we have a construction project to complete and pile driving is what we have to accomplish now and that shutting down this construction crew costs the institution about $5000/day, so bear with us as long as you can.
Today we initiated a number of steps to further control the diesel fumes entering the building. They are:
  1. install flexible exhaust pipe on the pile driver to divert the diesel fumes.
  2. get a newer crane so that diesel fume emission is as minimal as possible.
  3. exchange our current diesel hammer for an air hammer although an air hammer is not as effective as the diesel.
  4. have the mechanical engineer comment on the efficacy of (and design) a plenum to be built on the face of the air intake.
  5. work Saturdays (taking into account the wedding and baptism schedule for St. Luke's Chapel).

Please accept our sincerest thanks for supporting our work on the Children's Research Institute.

3/4/2002 - Views of new Lobby in Basic Science Building, and the Stairway into the CRI have been added. Click here.

2/21/2002 - Pile driving has started!

2/14/2002 - The next CRI Progress/BSB Occupants' Meeting will be Thursday, February 14, at 1:30 in BSB120. Greg Soyka with LS3P will show us the plans and finishes for the BSB Lobby renovation.

2/6/2002 - Here are directions for delivering waste to the Radiation Waste Building behind the Basic Sciences Building. Following these directions will not endanger anyone by having them walk through a construction zone. Directions are available for routes from BSB, or the CSB or Hollings Cancer Center.

1/28/2002 - Upcoming activities at the building site:

  • The Ashley Avenue entrance to the BSB loading dock is now closed for the duration of the CRI Building Project.
  • The loading dock on the South side of the Basic Science Building will be closed starting Monday 28, 2002. All deliveries and pickup vehicles will be re-routed to the Temporary Loading Dock. The vehicles cannot enter the construction area off of Ashley Ave. They must continue to Bee Street and make a left turn at the light and proceed to Saint Luke's Chapel parking lot entrance gate. The gate has a button that will call an attendant to allow entry to the lot. Once in the lot, stay left and then turn right to line up with the Temporary Loading Dock for backing up. All departments should notify vendors, service contractors and others who have to use the loading dock.
1/24/2002 - Upcoming activities at the building site:
  • there will be some noisy work performed on the north side of BSB next week (beginning January 31). The contractor must remove all concrete structures that project from the north side of the building, near the loading dock area. Once the contractor has actually severed the structures from the building, the noise should lessen significantly. This project will last about 5 days, if uninterrupted.
  • beginning Monday, January 28, the Ashley Avenue entrance to the BSB loading dock will be closed for the duration of the CRI
  • The new, temporary dock will be open Monday; access will be from Bee Street. Maps of the new route will soon be available on this site. Please notify your vendors of this change.

1/23/2002 - Upcoming activities at the building site:

  • pile-driving schedule moved up!
  • build a ramp over the steps at the northeast entry near the construction trailer for easy access to the Radioactive Waste Building
  • the infectious waste trailer will be moved to other side of the building for a few days
  • temporary loading dock construction continues

1/17/2002 - Upcoming activities at the building site:

  • move the telephone cable that is running through the construction site.
  • accept delivery of the temporary fuel tank and remove the existing unit.
  • install additional duct bank footage.
  • begin the temporary loading dock.

1/11/2002 - After many repairs, the gas service has been restored to the East end of the Basic Science Building and will be available as of 5:30 AM on 1-10-2002. We hope to get the West end back on line very soon. Many thanks to Jack Buchanan, the physical plant team and Risk Management for a job well done!

The expected power switchover occurred between 6:01 and 6:04 am.

A schedule of upcoming CRI Project Update/BSB Occupant's Meetings is available, and the minutes of these meetings will be published. (See the "meetings" link above.)

1/8/2002 - Power Outtage in Basic Science Building: The CRI construction project has come to a point where it will be necessary to switch from one electrical supply to another. This will cause a brief interruption in regular electrical power (not emergency power). Therefore, please prepare your equipment, computers, etc. accordingly. The changeover is scheduled for Jan. 10th at 6:00 AM.

1/3/2002 - What's Happening at the CRI Construction Site

  • loading dock and northwest entrance to BSB closed to pedestrian traffic
  • handicap parking spaces, formerly located against the northwest side of the building, have been moved directly west by about 25 yards
  • four test piles and four construction piles have been driven
  • piles are now undergoing load tests with several tons of concrete block; first test indicated excellent rebound and stability
  • vibration studies performed during the driving of the test piles indicate no humanly discernable vibration within the building
  • carbon filters have been installed on the air intake ducts to reduce introduction into the building of diesel fumes from the pile driving equipment
  • excavation will continue Jan 2 within the designated construction site; more grave sites are expected to be uncovered
  • Archeologist, Ralph Bailey, of Brockington & Associates, will give tours of the excavated site. Watch here for dates and times
  • Next CRI Project Progress/BSB Occupants' Meeting next Thursday, Jan 10, 1:30, BSB120

12/20/2001 - The CRI project update meetings will be held weekly on Thursdays, 1:30pm in room 120 in the Basic Sciences Building starting December 20th. This will replace the standing 8:30 Monday meetings. If you have any questions regarding this change, please reply your questions to Kimberly Horan 792-772. Topics on the agenda include: CRI progress overview and schedule update; results of the vibration study performed to monitor the pile driving.

12/3/2001 - Pile driving time is approaching. Look here for information.

11/7/2001 - Traffic-flow changes - It is important that students and occupants of BSB do not use any of the rear (North side) exits of the building except in the case of an emergency, because they exit into the fenced-in, Restricted Construction Site.
